Need for a small-footprint easy-to-deploy embedded Linux distribution triggered the work of emKnoppix. Knoppix was chosen because of its compressed file system architecture which makes deployment just as easy. Storage requirement of Knoppix is considerably low and I/O is faster compared to conventional file systems.

This work is part of ongoing research activities at Linuxense for commercial grade Linux-based embedded systems.
